The department has excellent working relation with the Institute of Marine Sciences in Zanzibar IMS The department also works in close relationship with Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute TAFIRI , The National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) and Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development.

There is a memorandum of understanding with Tanzania Marine Parks , which includes research and training of students in the park. The department is also collaborating very closely through MoUs with two NGOs, Sea Sense (conservation of turtles and dugongs) and Chumbe Island Coral Park. This collaboration opened up opportunities for our students to get field training during long vacation.

At international level, the department has an MoU with the Institute of Limnology of the University of Vienna in Austria, Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada and the World Learning Centre in Vermont, School for International Training (SIT).

Most academic members of staff in the department are members of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Sciences Association WIOMSA, which has been a platform for much regional collaboration. There is also a regional collaboration with the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), Nairobi University, Kenya; Eduardo Mondlane University, and the Inhaca Biological Research Station in Mozambique as well as several regional organisations and universities.

The department also has relation with Tanzania National Parks TANAPA and Mbegani Fisheries Development Centre Bagamoyo MFDC
